H.M. Rounsavall - death

Arch Nichols and Russell Williams were wandering around in Leagueville, near the pipeline. They heard a shot coming from across from Ruth Horton's house. They ran up there and Johnnie Hopson had shot H.M. Rounsavall. H.M. had fired a shot at Johnnie, and Johnnie grabbed a shot gun. H.M. had grabbed the barrel and Johnnie fired, shooting off H.M.'s finger tips and into his stomach.

Dr. Horton came around to see about H.M. and told Homer: "I can probably fix your fingers up but I can't do anything about the stomach. You had better get to a hospital."

Sel Smith had a studabaker and Arch and Sel loaded H.M. up and headed to a hospital.

Highway 175 wasn't in existence, but there was a sandy road that ran through to Jacksonville. However, given the time of year, August, cars couldn't make the trip through. So, they had to drive around through Tyler to Jacksonville. On the way through Tyler they had a flat tire. Sel had a jub of moonshine in the car and during the tire change asked H.M. if he needed a drink. H.M. said, "I believe I do and you know how I like it." It was understood that H.M. wanted the moonshine straight-up and not cut with water.

After the tire change the studabaker made it to Jacksonville. H.M. was in the elevator headed to the fourth floor where surgery could take place when he died.

as re-told by my Grandad, May 22, 2016 before church. We sat in the utility room and talked about Genealogy, various people in the community, and how my work at school was going.

Smeltertown: Making and Remembering a Southwest Border Community, by Monica Perales

Smeltertown existed as a smelting industry company-community and border town in El Paso, Texas. Through her own familial connection to Smeltertown, Monica Perales “traces the formation, evolution, demise, and collective memory of one of the largest single-industry Mexican-American communities on Mexican-US side of the border.” Smeltertown, as a community, was was made up of several real and imagined social worlds that were constantly shaped by ASARCO. The community that was forged in Smeltertown served as a way of survival for its residents, allowing the influence from ASARCO to be lessened. Smeltertown tells the story of how its residents ordered their immediate socials.
Perales begins Smeltertown by tracing the development of El Paso as a
center of international commerce and immigration. Given its location, Perales asserts that El Paso almost had to serve as the location of a transnational mining and smelting company such as ASARCO. Copper and capital had transformed El Paso into an international center for railroad, mining, and smelting by the early 1900s. Political and business power brokers paved the way for the political economy of the city to foster ASARCO’s growth that would eventually establish a social and racial hierarchy within Smeltertown.
Smeltertown examines life in the barrio and the multilayered worlds created by the company and the residents against a backdrop of industrial capitalism and racial segregation. Perales “charts the contours of the web of overlapping and interwoven communities that existed in Smeltertown.” The author notes a great chasm that existed between the living conditions of the white managerial families and the families of the Mexican laborers. Also, Perales explains that the separateness extended to social places as well. The ice skating rink on the company cooling pond and the company-owned bowling alley were only used by whites living in Smeltertown. In reality, there were two company towns, one Anglo and one Mexican.
Through jobs at the smelter Mexican men began to define themselves as a permanent class of employees. Becoming a smelter man usually began with living within the community of Smeltertown with various family members. These non-transient men would eventually gain stability through seniority. Ties to family and previous generations bound smelter men to Smeltertown and ASARCO, which Perales aptly demonstrates with her own familial and generational ties to the smelter. Hard work amid dangerous working conditions also defined life as a smelter man. Smeltertown probes these two intertwining historical processes, the creation of the Mexican-worker stereotype and the proletarianization of Mexican workers, and defines life as a smelter man.
If living on the U.S. side of a border town made Smeltertown residents American, Perales looks at how they also never left their Mexican culture and customs behind. The San Jose’ de Cristo Rey Catholic parish served as a place for Esmeltianos to reimagine what it meant to be racially and culturally Mexican in an American border town. The Catholic chapel on the hill became the locus of what it meant to Mexican in a border town. Through their sense of community and the Catholic parish, Esmeltianos retained many aspects of their Mexican culture: Spanish language, Mexican patriotism, Catholicism. “Blending elements of national and ethnic pride, shared language, and a common experience with Catholicism provided a foundation on which Esmeltianos reconfigured what it meant to be Mexican in a U.S. city.”
Thanks to the company-owned education system, Smeltertown residents were provided a space for students to become involved in an American world. Perales argues that young women blended an identity combining elements from both worlds, Mexican and American. The school offered young women social, cultural, and political spaces that permitted them to challenge gendered boundaries set by their immigrant parents.
Perales also traces the demise of Smeltertown beginning with El Paso resident’s growing concern over the smelter’s emissions and their effect on the border city. Combined with those concerns and deadly lead exposure, El Paso and ASARCO decided to raze Smeltertown and relocate inhabitants to other parts of the city. “The very industrial processes that had brought it life had destroyed Smeltertown.”

Even as the image of Smeltertown changed from a source of city pride to a source of major embarrassment, Smeltertown residents defended ASARCO until the bitter end. The community that had bound so many residents together through generations, families, and friendships would be no more. However, Smeltertown’s memory lives on in the minds of its people and the Smeltertown and ASARCO reunions that are still held in El Paso.

Man charged in house fire that killed 2

Dallas Morning News, The (TX) (Published as DALLAS MORNING NEWS) - APRIL 10, 1991
BROWNSBORO, Texas -- A Henderson County man was charged with murder Tuesday in connection with the firebombing deaths of two Edom residents.

Deral M. Couey, 30, of Brownsboro remains in the Henderson County Jail in lieu of $45,000 bail, and authorities said the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Department was questioning a second suspect in the case.

Capt. Rock Ellis of the Van Zandt Sheriff's Department said Mr. Couey is charged in the deaths of Mary Ray, 54, and her son Mickey Ray, 28, who died in a house fire caused by a combustible bomb Sunday about midnight.

Two of Mr. Ray's children, his ex-wife and a man who was visiting the family were able to escape the house, about two miles east of Edom. Capt. Ellis said the incident was the result of a feud between Mr. Couey and Mr. Ray. Capt. Ellis said charges of arson and attempted murder are expected to be filed against Mr. Couey, who was arrested Monday at his home. Brownsboro is about 20 miles southwest of Tyler. -

I am also a descendant of Wiley Marion Hopson and his wife Mary E. Howard through their son Madison Rowan Hopson b. Feb 12, 1857 m. Laura Lee. I'm afraid I do not have much info to add except that I belive Wiley Marion Hopson's mother was Agnes Hall and that she had a sister named Bashaba b 1810 m. John Dunkin. Agnes Hall Hopson is buried in the Jennings Mountain Cemetery, so of Brownsboro, TX and her grandaughter is buried near her. Agnes is suppose to have been born in Georgia or SC. If anyone has any more info, I would appreciate your sharing it. Thanks, Opal McDaniel Meyers.

I am looking for family information on my ggrandmother's side. My ggrandmother was Mary Elizabeth "Mae/Mollie" Hopson. She was born in Murchison, Henderson Co, TX on 07/14/1875 and died on 10/04/1966 in Houston, Harris Co, TX.

Her father was William "Wiley" Hopson (not sure of middle name) and mother Mary E.(Elizabeth) Howard. I'm assuming they married in Texas, but not sure. My ggrandmother had several brothers and sisters. Some of the names I've heard from family members were Cass, Wiley and possibly a Raymond. They were a muscial family who played fiddles, etc. and a wild bunch who as kids fought each other a lot. I was told that the name Hopson was Irish and Howard was Dutch or Irish.

My ggrandmother lived in the Murchison/Nacogdoches area for awhile. She married Henry Thomas Cook - twice and Edgar Cleveland. Possibly a Mr. Day, Mr. Grice and John Bunch. She had 7 kids - Eva Cleveland (Turner), Lillie Mae Cook (Henson/Moss), Era Day (Cristos), Willie Mae Cook, Doria (died at birth), Bertha Cook (Youngblook) and William Henry Cook. For awhile (between husbands, I guess) Lillie Mae and Willie Mae were placed in the Odd Fellows State Orphans Home in Corsicana, TX around 1920.

No one in my family knows much about the Hopson side, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for any information on my grandfather - Aqullar Marsh Henson and his first family. He first married a lady and had about 7 children. One daughter named Minnie )who married a guy named Hugo) and one son named Eric. Those are the only children's names I've been told.

Later he married my grandmother Lillie Mae Cook and had 16 children (13 lived). They lived in various parts of Texas. He worked in the oilfields and was a carpenter. Aqullar had 2 brothers, Chelsea and McKinley. There father was William and mother was Sarah Brown/Wallace. Aqullar was born in Ft. Graham, Hill Co., TX born before 1900.

I'm not sure if we are looking for the same people, but my grandfather was Aqullar Marsh Henson born in Ft. Graham, Hill Co, TX who also had a dad named William Marion Henson plus his mother was named Sarah. I was told Sarah's last name was Brown. Can't be sure of her last name. William Marion Henson was suppose to be born in Ohio. Do you think we are talking about the same family? Sounds like it. Did you ever find anymore information?
